Turkey, Greece, Macedonia

In the summer of 2002 I went on a 3 week trip to Greece, Turkey and Macedonia with Adam. Dennis hooked me up with another buddy pass so I wasn't really sweating it.

We had a day layover in New York and Cubby and his girlfiend happened to be there so we toured the city with them. It was my first time in New York so it was a bonus for me...

Central Park...

at Ground Zero...

We landed in Paris and then went our separate ways to Greece. Adam fly directly there and I took the over night train to Venice and then flew from there. We met up in Athens at my sister's good friend's house, Jessica. Jessica was working for the Olympic committee and had a nice pad. We did the normal touristy things in Athens. Saw the Parthenon and the Acropolis, checked out all the olympic sites etc etc.. Highlights: 4 of us getting stuck in the miniature elevator for 30 min , until the navy seal guy saved us, going to the "party of the century" and it being the biggest bust ever.

Santorini, Greece
- A really cool island that has its own beauty. Santorini is essentially what has been left from an enormous volcanic explosion. All the homes and mantic couple than 2 low budget travelers, but it was still a fun place for us. We rented scooters and toured the island which was wellbuildings on the island are white with blue rooftops. The island also features black sand beaches. The island caters more toward ro worth the money...

EOS, Greece
- After Santorini we took a fiery to the Eos. Nothing really special about this island. Not sure why we choose it. The highlight was when the drunk European slipped by the pool and fell while telling all the Israelis that he was the chosen people.

Rhodes, Greece
- From Eos we took a fiery to Rohodes. Rhodes has been famous since antiquity as the site of Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. It still has midevil ramparts that surround the city that are still in great condition.

Cappadocia, Turkey (see video) -
One of the most remarkable places I have ever been...After the eruption of Mt. Erciyes about 2000 years ago, the volcanic deposits formed soft rocks in the Cappadocia Region. People of Goreme, at the heart of the Cappadocia Region, realized that these soft rocks could be easily carved out to form houses, churches, monasteries.

Cappadocia contains several underground cities, largely used by early Christians as hiding places before they become a legitimate religion. We went to one that went 9 stories underground...

ISTANBUL -
don't remember too many of the specifics. We only stayed for a day. I remember there were a lot mosques. We took a tour on the river of the whole city. Apparently the river breaks Istanbul into 2 parts; the European side and the Asain side. I may have just made that up....

The Hagia Sofia and the Blue Mosque were the highlights of Istanbul.

Hagia Sophia (Greek: Holy Wisdom), now known as the Ayasofya Museum, was an early Christian Church and later an Eastern Orthodox church which was transformed into a mosque in 1453 by the Turks, and converted into a museum in 1935.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque (Turkish: Sultanahmet Camii) is a mosque in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (from 1453 to 1923). The mosque is famously known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior.

On our way to Macedonia.... We took a 16 hour bus ride from Istanbul through Bulgaria. At the start of the trip I noticed I didn't have any foot space because someone had stuffed a bag of cigarettes under the chair. I tried to move them, but stopped when I noticed a guy running his finger across his throat and looking straight at me. At the border they made Adam and I smuggle the cigarettes across the border in our baggage as well as several other passengers on the bus. So that's coo.

Macedonia chicks are surprisingly hot and their teeth weren't too jacked up.... We spend a day or 2 in at lake Ohrid, but I can't seem to find any photos....

Crossing back into Greece from Macedonia proved to be a little bit tricky. I don't remember the details really (maybe it was cheaper), but we ended up taking the bus to the border and then walking across into Greece and to the next town (which was at least 10 miles away. We started thumbing it and the only person that would pull over was a tractor driver....

In the town near the border (can't remember the name) we couldn't find a hotel so we ended up buying pool rafts and sleeping in the park. We didn't have any blankets or sleeping bags so it was pretty damn cold.

Meteora was one of the highlights of the trip. Check out the history at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meteora. In a nutshell there were about 20 monasteries built in the 14th century on the top of really shear rocks. It order to get to the top the monks sent down baskets and pulled people up. Pretty cool...
